As a landmark in Brazilian television history, the telenovela is examined through three lenses: 1) its role as a vehicle for the Brazilian "economic miracle" narrative of the late 2000s; 2) its problematic yet influential representation of Indian culture through the lens of Edward Said’s Orientalism; and 3) its narrative structure that merges the traditional romantic melodrama with contemporary globalized themes (outsourcing, religious conflict, and class mobility).
