Introduction: The Living Word in Montenegrin Culture In Montenegro, a country whose history is defined by resistance (against the Ottoman Empire, Venice, and Nazi occupation), the spoken word has always carried immense weight. In the absence of a long-standing urban literary tradition, the bajka (fairy tale) and the epska pjesma (epic poem) served as repositories of law, morality, and history.
