"Another new teacher?" said a boy spinning a basketball that didn't quite touch the floor. "Great. He'll run away by Friday."

That first night, Modesto heard a chalkboard screech from Room 33. He pushed the door open. Five teenagers sat in perfect rows. Their clothes were from 1992—flannel shirts, ripped jeans, a neon windbreaker. Their faces were pale, faintly translucent.

Álvaro finally turned to Sandra. "I should have said it on the bus. I liked you since seventh grade."

Modesto stood alone in the empty room. On the chalkboard, someone had written: "Best teacher ever. Thanks for seeing us." We're ghosts

The school planned to demolish Room 33 in one week. If the room vanished, the ghosts would fade into nothing.

Modesto knelt to eye level. "In my experience, the dead care more about love than the living do."

His latest assignment was a punishment: take over the night cleaning shift in the school's oldest wing. The principal hoped the quiet would discourage his "ghost nonsense."
