In the beautiful Italian city of Verona, two powerful families, the Montagues and the Capulets, have been feuding for generations. Their hatred is so deep that even servants clash violently in the streets, disturbing the peace. The Meeting Romeo Montague, a young man romantic and dreamy, is heartbroken because Rosaline, a woman he loves, does not return his feelings. To cheer him up, his cousin Benvolio and his friend Mercutio convince him to attend a masquerade ball hosted by the Capulets, hoping he will see other beauties and forget Rosaline.

At the ball, Romeo sees Juliet, the only daughter of Lord and Lady Capulet, and instantly forgets Rosaline. It is love at first sight. Juliet, too, is captivated by Romeo. They speak a sonnet together and share a kiss, not knowing each other’s names. Only after the ball does Romeo learn she is a Capulet, and Juliet learns he is a Montague. That night, Romeo climbs the walls of the Capulet orchard and hides beneath Juliet’s balcony. Juliet, unaware he is listening, speaks of her love for him despite the family feud. Romeo reveals himself, and they exchange vows of love. The next day, with the help of Friar Laurence, who hopes to end the feud, they are secretly married. The only other confidant is Juliet’s Nurse. Moments later, Friar Laurence arrives, sees the blood and the empty vial. Juliet wakes from the potion. Seeing Romeo dead, she refuses to leave with the Friar. She kisses his poisoned lips and, hearing guards approaching, stabs herself with Romeo’s dagger. The Prince, the Capulets, and Lord Montague arrive. Montague announces that his wife has died of grief over Romeo’s exile. The Prince scolds both families for their hatred, which has caused these tragic deaths. The Friar tells the whole story.
