The door opened. Inside, a woman who looked exactly like Mara — but older, and smiling too wide — said, “You took the wrong turn home.” She’d never shown that photo to anyone
“GPS says this cuts forty minutes,” he said, swerving onto a gravel road marked FOREST SERVICE USE ONLY . The sign was half-rotten, like a tooth punched out of the earth.
She’d taken one thirty years ago, too.
