After a triumphant title defense, Billy gets into a heated altercation at a charity event with a ruthless up-and-coming challenger, Miguel "Magic" Escobar (Miguel Gomez). The fight escalates, and in the ensuing chaos, a gunshot rings out. Maureen is tragically killed, leaving Billy shattered.

Billy "The Great" Hope (Jake Gyllenhaal) is the reigning light heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Consumed by grief, rage, and guilt, Billy’s life spirals out of control. He loses his mansion, his fortune, and—most devastatingly—custody of Leila to child protective services. Hitting rock bottom, a desperate Billy seeks out a grizzled, no-nonsense trainer at a rundown gym: Tick Willis (Forest Whitaker). Tick agrees to train him, but only on one condition—Billy must learn discipline, defense, and control, abandoning the brawling style that cost him everything.
